Allied dental professionals have different roles regarding patient care. These are reflected in the competencies presented for each discipline. The roles of the allied dental disciplines in patient care are ever-changing, yet central to the maintenance of health. Allied dental graduates must use their skills following a defined process of care in the provision of patient care services and treatment modalities. Allied dental personnel must be appropriately educated in an accredited program and credentialed for the patient care services they provide; these requirements vary by individual jurisdiction.

PC. 1

Systematically collect, analyze, and record diagnostic data on the general, oral, and psychosocial health status of a variety of patients using methods consistent with medicolegal principles.

During my second semester in the Dental Hygiene Program at Missouri Southern State University, I completed an assignment that prepared me for patient screening and treatment planning. We were assigned to find a patient that had received treatment from students in their final semester of the dental hygiene program. This patient was required to be taking multiple medications, had dental charting completed, and fit certain demographics. We were instructed to be thourough in our orginazation of this patient's treatment, medications, and conditions. This assignment forced us to learn the software we could be expected to understand for our clinical schedules in the upcoming Summer, Fall and Spring semesters. This assignment was presented to and critiqued by instructors and students within the program, and we were also able to practice staging and grading of patients through this assignment.
