Reflect opportunities that may increase patients’ access to the oral health care system or may offer ways to influence the profession and the changing health care environment. The allied dental professional must possess transferable skills (e.g., in communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking) to take advantage of these opportunities.

PGD.1 Pursue career opportunities within health care, industry, education, research, and other roles as they evolve for the dental hygienist.

In the Spring of my senior year at the Missouri Southern State University, I partcipated in a community health promotion assignment with a group of my peers. The assignment required that we create a presentation tailor-made for educational leaders to present to their target demographic. Our group was tasked with instrucing educators on how to instruct parents on preventing early childhood caries. My group created a powerpoint to present to a group of professional educators, and made a pre-test and post-test to evaluate the level of understanding and comprehension of our audience. We also submitted a paper that required extensive research on our assigned organization, including visiting the site ahead of time and interviewing an authority of the WIC program in Joplin, Missouri. This assignment was very rewarding, and I believe it made a difference towards minimizing the effect early childhood caries has on children in the WIC program in our area. I never realized how much I would enjoy the educational aspect of dental hygiene, and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to bring new and important information to the community around me.
